Objectives
The Newsbug project had the following objectives:
-
To understand how new media can be used to extend the reach of public
information systems and improve community response to emergencies
(understanding communities).
- To establish the foundation of an
innovative new service with the potential to save lives and property,
nationally and globally (emergency management capability).
- To assert
the interests of emergency management organizations in the evolution of
new national media communications infrastructure (information
management and technology).
The project was:
-
An initial exploration of the new technologies;
- Designed to provide
insights, not definitive answers;
- A pilot, intended to identify
potential applications of new technologies in the domain;
- Intended to
build upon existing protocols; Intended to provide a foundation for
future research and development.
The project was not:
-
A definitive or final solution;
- A competitor to existing emergency
public information systems (rather it is a complement to current modes
of communication);
- Intended to have significant impacts on existing
workflows and responsibilities of stakeholder agencies;
- Focussed on
intra-agency or inter-agency communication;
- Intended to generate new
types of information content.
